Kites recalls such master movie mixologists as Sergio Leone, Quentin Tarantino, and Baz Luhrmann. Producer Rakesh Roshan and director Anurag Basu, have made Kites into an intoxicating cinematic cocktail with a flavor—and a kick—all its own.
Kites is a pure Bollywood entertainer from start to finish. The Kites team have proven that it is possible to make a film that interprets mainstream Bollywood in all its big budget glory into a film style that works on both the world stage and at home.
KITES is a business module for anyone wanting to invest in movies and hit the jackpot. Provided they also get their PR machinery in place, almost a year before the release.
Kites starts off well enough, but loses itself in a mess of superficiality, which would have been just fine if the film wasn’t also masquerading as operatic drama
And yet the film doesn’t become more than the sum of its parts because the second half is flat and in places, outright foolish. It’s far from brilliant or even fully satisfying but it’s easily one of the better Bollywood films I’ve seen this year.
Kaho na story hai? Sorry, if there is one, it’s replete with cheesy coincidences, mind-spinning implausiblities, senseless killings and heisted material from more movies than you can count on your toes and fingers
Kites is shot beautifully, produced lavishly and has some decent action sequences. However, the music remains average, while the background score is a bit too operatic. The major problem however, remains the ordinary story, and the garbled screenplay that follows.
What makes the movie pop is a standout performance by Roshan, one of Indian cinema’s treasures. Blessed with near-divine good looks and a chiseled form (not to mention an auspicious extra right thumb), the green-eyed actor also happens to be Bollywood’s most accomplished dancer. Despite the extremes of Basu’s script and producer Rakesh Roshan’s story, Roshan anchors the film with a solid, believable performance and a palpable chemistry with his co-star that will remind audiences just how hot a good Bollywood romance can be
Watch Kites because it’s an ambitious, brave experiment that may not always work, but it tries. Which is more than what one can say about many films we’ve seen recently.
