Best Bollywood Basketball Movies and Series

The Bollywood industry is growing rapidly in the past couple of years reaching a total value of $2.83 billion. However, experts predict that in 2021, Bollywood could reach up to $4.5 billion, which is nearly double its current value.

This inspires many production companies and directors to invest in new high-quality movies that can rival some of the best film production from Hollywood.

With that said, Hollywood flicks are catching up fast in India, and action movies contribute the most of the box office revenues. However, since the action scene is densely packed in Bollywood with tons of competition, directors and production companies started to explore new branches in the film industry.

This is where Bollywood directors started to make foreign-themed movies that perform very well for the local people. There are new branches to be explored in the film industry in India, such as sports that are not that popular in that part of the world.

This brings us to Basketball movies in India. When you think about sports in India, you immediately think about Cricket.  However, since the country is modernizing and accepting other cultures, this is the perfect time to adopt some other sports and there is no better way than through movies.

In today’s article, we will highlight some of the best basketball movies in Bollywood.

Half Girlfriend

This is a movie based on a book by Chetan Bhagat and it is a fun movie for a Sunday escape. The movie is directed by Mohit Suri and the main actors are Arjun Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor. The movie is a love story about a young college basketball player that falls in love with Shraddha Kapoor’s character.

It is a nice romance movie that shows how sports, particularly basketball brings people together.

Time Out

This is another relaxed movie with a lot of confusing teenage plan that takes place on the basketball court. Time Out is released back in 2015, and it is one of the first Indian movies where basketball is the main theme.

This is a teen drama, much like High School Musical, where the main characters are the 14-year-old Gaurav (Chirag Malhotra) and his relationship with his elder brother Mihir (Prenay Pachauri). With that said, Time Out has stilled a movie that tackles serious questions about our society. In the movie, Gaurav finds out that his elder brother likes boys more than girls.

The drama now unveils followed by a ton of teenage confusing stuff.

Dhoom 2

Here we have a movie from 2006, and still one of the classics that you must watch again. The movie is about Ali (Uday Chopra) and his dream of becoming a police officer, which eventually becomes true. He is Jai Dixit’s right-hand man and they are sweeping the streets of India together.

This is not a basketball movie, but it earned an honorable mention on our list thanks to an unforgettable scene. It is a scene where Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan played basketball while it was raining.

The idea of incorporating a long basketball scene in this movie was genius and makes the move that much cooler, especially when love sparks are starting to fly away.

Kuch Kuch Hota Hai

There is no point in highlighting the connection between basketball and Bollywood without mentioning Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. This is a movie where basketball takes is the main theme and its impact on teenagers in India.

This is another movie where a bunch of college students plays basketball with every free time they get. It is a real 3-point extravaganza and it definitely shows the faded connection between basketball and Hindi movies.

Wanted

No, we are not talking about the Angelina Jolie curving bullet movie Wanted. This is a Bollywood movie that takes a different direction. It is about a man called Bhai and his love for basketball. Salman Khan plays basketball at a local Mumbai court with all of the street thugs from his neighborhood.

It is a crime movie where they want to go after the corruption in the police department. It is a great movie to watch, especially with a sprinkle of basketball. It’s not among the 20 best basketball movies of all time, but it’s still a very entertaining one.
